Lara can walk ghost-like through this door anyways, but if you use the key to open it the game will fade to black and reload with a police car just ahead. The key resting on this ledge works for the gate next to the streetlamp, which leads to a courtyard. There’s a nice touch here-when you leap out and grab the wire, the crow on the ledge flies away.

Lara will tell you how to traverse the nearby wire, which leads to a ledge on the opposite building. There’s a pushable barrel in here, as well as a pipe you can use to climb up to a higher ledge. Provided you don’t accidentally make Lara fall screaming into oblivion, you will emerge in another graffiti-ridden alley. Just look at that mess! Perhaps Paris should make more of an effort for the tourists… You can also enter by taking advantage of a bug at the end of the Le Serpent Rouge level further on in the game.

This area can be accessed with the Fly Cheat on PC, or in anti-gravity mode on the PS2 (with the PlayStation2 Cheats Disc). The area beyond is actually the secret training area, which was left unfinished and subsequently locked away in the final version of the game. The door beyond the lantern frustrates many with its blatant refusal to open. Feel free to tease it by kicking it or jumping around and generally flaunting your freedom, but make sure not to get too close or it can bite you to death (we’re guessing it’s worked up quite an appetite down here).

Nearby, you will find another of those lovely attack dogs which chased you in the opening movie chained to a wall. We gather that the idea is to collect enough valuables to trade later, but the doubloons seem a bit overdone, since you also get money and jewellery, which makes more sense. The doubloons in this level are a mystery too there may be some tenuous link with alchemy and Eckhardt there, but this all remains speculation. They’re everywhere as well, which makes us think that students plastered them everywhere, much to the city council’s annoyance. What’s a girl to do?Īs for those Europe2 posters plastered in the alley, it’s a French network of FM radio stations dedicated to Rock and Pop music, relaunched in 2008 as Virgin Radio. Stranded in the backstreets of Paris without a backpack.

There will be many typos like this to look out for throughout the course of the game obviously, the Core team’s French was a little rusty…

The sign here translates as “Martin Meallet, manufacturer of pewter counters, established etc.” Maison princip translates as main/principal house, but there is actually a typo here, since ‘princip’ does not exist in French, whilst ‘principe’ does. Directly ahead of you there will be a chocolate bar resting within a doorway. This level begins in a rain-drenched alley, scattered with rubbish bins. Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness opens in the rain-swept streets of Paris, which are teeming with mythology, graffiti and many an inexplicable chocolate bar.
